Students at IES have access to a wide curriculum, featuring some excellent opportunities to learn and work in many vocations. We work with a number of separate providers to offer a wealth of courses giving students the chance to take part in areas of interest to them as individuals. Working with companies such as VTEC and local builders has helped us boost the skilled roles of our students with subjects such as carpentry, brick-laying, roofing, plumbing, electrics and more.
Some students access a bank of providers through Coventry’s Work Related Learning team at the council. The team have access to numerous providers, offering hands on courses with accreditations for those who complete the course. We work closely with Coombe Abbey and their Land Based Management courses, though there is scope for interested students to join hairdressers, manufacturing plants, colleges, engineering, ICT, public relations, music and many more!
The school has proudly engaged in out of area trips to PGL recently, visiting a centre for a week in 2016, and with a trip booked for 2017, this has become a new annual event for students to look forward to. PGL (‘Parent’s Get Lost!’, or officially ‘Peter Gordon Lawrence’) is a selection of youth camps throughout the UK and abroad, offering team building, and individual activities. Going Monday to Friday, students get to enjoy activities such as archery, shooting, climbing, abseiling, high-ropes and many more. Fully supported by staff at IES on a 1-1 ratio, students have managed to overcome personal fears (such as heights!) and create strong, lasting bonds with their peers. The opportunity for individuals to shine, show their growth during their time with IES and enjoy themselves, is something that we actively encourage year on year.
